ALLSTATE STOPS WRITING SOME FLORIDA HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE:

October 25, 2004

Allstate, Florida’s third-largest homeowner’s insurance company has stopped writing new policies in some sections of the state. More than 35,000 insurance adjusters traveled to the state after the onslaught of four hurricanes. Damage is still being totaled and claims are still being filed. Until the damage is added up, Allstate officials say they are not going to write any new homeowners policies in some harder-hit counties. In some lesser-affected counties, the company is writing only renters insurance or homeowners policies without windstorm coverage. Allstate spokesman Ryan Priest said the company wants new business but added the company needs to add up costs before it can guarantee its ability to cover everyone. Allstate lost an estimated $425 million from Hurricane Charley. Allstate said it’s making some exceptions for long-time customers.
