STUDENTS, WEAPONS, AND SCHOOL BULLYING FACTS AND FIGURES

  • 16 percent of 15,686 students surveyed nationally in the sixth though 10th grades said they had been bullied in that school year.
  • Of the 16 percent, 6 percent admitted to bullying other students.
  • 18 percent of students surveyed nationally said they had carried a weapon 30 days preceding the survey.
  • 5.4 percent student said they had carried a gun in the 30 days preceding the survey.
  • 6.4 percent of students said they had carried a weapon onto school property in the 30 preceding the survey.
  • In the 12 months preceding the survey, 7.9 percent of the students said they had been threatened or injured with a weapon on school property one or more times.
  • 6 percent of students reported not going to school in the 30 days preceding the survey because they felt unsafe at school or traveling to and from school.
  • In 2003, students’ ages 12 to 18 years were victims of about 740,000 violent crimes.
