Patrick Gallagher

Patrick Gallagher was appointed president and CEO of Florida-based American Superior Holding Co. and its affiliates.

Gallagher comes to American Superior with 38 years of insurance experience including executive positions with Poe Financial Group, American Modern Insurance Group and A.I.G.

Gallagher has also been elected to the Board of Directors of American Superior’s companies.

Ed White

Maryland-based Montgomery Insurance, a member of Liberty Regional Agency Markets (RAM), a business unit of Boston’s Liberty Mutual Group, announced that Ed White has been promoted to vice president of personal lines and Ralph LaSpina has been named regional vice president, Southeast Regional Office.

White will be responsible for field operations, home-office underwriting and support services. He joined Montgomery in 2003 from GoAmerica Auto Insurance, an Indiana-based insurer that is also part of the RAM organization.

LaSpina noted that “Montgomery Insurance’s philosophy is to keep decision-making close to our agents and insureds, that way we can respond quickly to local needs. By taking this philosophy forward, we will continue to enhance Montgomery Insurance’s Southeast Region’s reputation for quality and stability in the marketplace.”

Acordia Re noted two new appointments for its New Jersey headquarters.

Jason Witthun

Jason Witthun has been named account executive, while Rick Cassell is the new vice president in charge of reinsurance accounting.

Witthun most recently worked for American E&S, Acordia’s excess and surplus lines division, based in the Florida office where he focused on catastrophe driven property accounts.

Cassell has 18 years of reinsurance experience, most recently employed with Maiden Lane in Pennsylvania, where he specialized in treaty clients, negotiating lead terms and new business.

Thomas Conroy

Markel American Insurance Co. appointed Thomas Conroy to marine director.

Before taking the marine director position, Conroy served as claims supervisor where he led a watercraft and recreational vehicle claims team. Conroy is member of the International Association of Marine Investigators and has obtained his Associate in Claims (AIC) Designation.

Georgia-based Palmer & Cay Inc., one of the nation’s largest privately-held insurance brokerage and benefits consulting firms, has named Christopher Sachs as chief financial officer, according to John Cay III, chairman and CEO.

Sachs, a 27-year veteran of the corporate finance field, will be responsible for overseeing all finance and accounting functions for Palmer & Cay and its subsidiaries. He will report directly to the
chairman.

Prior to joining Palmer & Cay, Sachs held senior financial management positions with two multi-national companies for more than 20 years. In 1984 Sachs joined Outboard Marine Corporation as director of taxes and was promoted to treasurer for the billion-dollar organization in 1992. In 1996 he was named treasurer of Cleveland-based M.A. Hanna Company and its successor entity Polyone Corporation, a $2.6 billion global chemical manufacturer.

Established in 1868 in Savannah, Ga., Palmer & Cay operates offices in 38 cities in 22 states and employs approximately 1,000 associates.

Evergreen Re, a national healthcare reinsurance and medical risk brokerage firm, appointed Bill Whitaker as the company’s chief operating officer.

Whitaker brings more than 20 years of management experience and more than a dozen years of senior management health care expertise. Before joining Evergreen Re, Whitaker served as vice president of sales for Horizon Behavioral Services.

Zurich North America announced the appointment of Christopher Taylor as president of the Financial Enterprises profit center. In this capacity, Taylor will lead efforts to further strengthen the company’s position in the financial institution and related financial services industry.

In his previous position as senior vice president for Zurich’s Financial Enterprises Target Markets group, Taylor was responsible for sales, distribution and business development. He joined that group at the end of 1994 as regional vice president for the Chesapeake region.

Previously, he had 17 years experience in the insurance industry and held a number of management and leadership positions.

Lloyd’s announced that Philip Lader, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, is to join the Council at Lloyd’s, the ultimate governing body of the market.

Lader served as U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. from 1997 to 2001 and has extensive global business and government experience. He’s currently non-executive chairman of global advertising/communications services firm WPP Group plc, and also serves on the boards of Marathon Oil, RAND and AES corporations. He is a senior advisor to investment bank Morgan Stanley.

Lader served in President Clinton’s cabinet as administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, and was White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President.

Marshall & Swift / Boeckh, a worldwide provider of residential and commercial cost data, technology and services for the property insurance industry, announced the appointment of Shelton Shugar as vice president and chief technology officer.

In his role as chief technology officer, Shugar is responsible for product development, product delivery and technology infrastructure.
