Iowa-based United Fire & Casualty Co. announced new executive appointments and the election of four new directors for full terms on its 12-member board.

Denver Regional Office Underwriting Manager Jolene Grow was appointed assistant vice president of United Fire & Casualty Co. Her new title is assistant vice president and underwriting manager.

Great Lakes Marketing Manager Patrick P. Kane was appointed assistant vice president. His new title is assistant vice president and Great Lakes marketing manager.

Regional Claims Manager L. Dean Walstrom was appointed assistant vice president. His new title is assistant vice president and regional claims manager.

Elected to the board of directors for a three-year term expiring in 2014 are: Douglas M. Hultquist, president and CEO, QCR Holdings Inc., Moline, Ill.; Casey D. Mahon, adjunct professor of law, University of Iowa College of Law, Iowa City, Iowa; Randy A. Ramlo, president and CEO, United Fire Group, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Frank S. Wilkinson Jr., retired executive, E.W. Blanch Co., Minneapolis, Minn.

In addition, James W. Noyce was named chair of the audit committee, taking over for Thomas W. Hanley, who will remain a member of the audit committee.

Wells Publishing Inc., publisher of Insurance Journal, Claims Journal and MyNewMarkets.com, recently hired Denise Johnson as associate editor of Claims Journal.

Johnson’s background includes various claims positions, including serving as a senior claims examiner, field claims representative and a claims adjuster at Nautilus a Insurance Co., Continental Western Group, Indiana Insurance and Wausau Insurance. Johnson has also written for numerous Web and print publications, including Frontier Airlines’ in-flight magazine and Verdict Search, as well as for trade associations and non-profit organizations. She has a bachelor’s of science in criminal justice, as well as an associate in claims and an associate in surplus lines designations.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) elected North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm as its new Secretary-Treasurer. Hamm replaces Illinois Insurance Director Michael T. McRaith, who was selected in March to lead the Federal Insurance Office in Washington, D.C.

Hamm was appointed North Dakota Insurance Commissioner in October 2007 and was elected to a four-year term in November 2008. He currently serves as chair of the NAIC Life Insurance and Annuities Committee, vice chair of the Midwest Zone and chair of the Principles-Based Reserving Working Group.

Jack Messmore was appointed acting director at the Illinois Department of Insurance. Messmore, previously chief deputy director steps into the role following the departure of Michael McRaith.

Messmore has been with the agency for 25 years and has previously served as deputy director, assistant deputy director and examiner-in-charge. He holds an accounting degree from Eastern Illinois University and is an active member of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

State Auto Financial Corp., based in Columbus, Ohio, elected Timothy (Tim) G. Reik a vice president following his appointment as director of Risk Evaluation and Design (RED) Operations. Reik was also elected vice president at State Automobile Mutual Insurance Co. and State Auto Property & Casualty Insurance Co.

Reik joined State Auto in 2000 as a territory manager for the state of Indiana. He later joined the program management office as assistant vice president of personal lines marketing, and was eventually named assistant vice president of sales and marketing.

Reik holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations.

Kyle B. Anderson, Diane M. Dierna, Winford (Win) L. Logan and Jeffrey (Jeff) D. Wilson were elected assistant vice presidents by the boards of directors of State Automobile Mutual and State Auto Property & Casualty Insurance Companies.

Anderson, assistant vice president, director of corporate communications, joined State Auto’s policyholder services department in 1993, then corporate communications in 1994. He returned to State Auto in 2006 as director of media relations.

Dierna, assistant vice president, director of Total Rewards, brought more than 20 years of compensation and human resources experience to State Auto in 2007. She previously held similar roles with Huntington Banks, Nationwide Insurance, First Chicago and Borden Inc.

Logan, assistant vice president, director of community relations, joined State Auto in 1972 as a publications editor, later moving to human resources where he served as compensation manager and department manager. Logan was named director of corporate communications in 1997. He currently serves as managing director of the State Auto Foundation.

Wilson, assistant vice president, director of farm and ranch, began his career as an insurance agent, later joining Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance where he served as a personal lines underwriter, property and casualty specialist and underwriting manager for commercial and farm. He joined State Auto in 2006 as farm product manager. Wilson holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Professional Farm Mutual Manager (PFMM) and the Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS) designations.

Mark Heuer was promoted to vice president – national agency relations for Crump Insurance Services Inc. In this position, Heuer will work with larger retail agents helping to match resources, teams and expertise. He will also work with carriers to identify and create the best products for individual needs. He will be based in Crump’s Chicago office.

Heuer began his career at Crump in 2005 as vice president – casualty broker. He also has served as the vice president of business development for the Chicago office. Prior to Crump, he served as vice president – casualty broker with CRC Dallas.

Privately held insurance broker Lockton Companies named Casey Zgutowicz as producer in its Chicago office. In addition, Courtney Coury joined Lockton Chicago as assistant vice president and account executive in the financial services practice.

Zgutowicz joined Lockton Chicago in 2005 as financial services practice leader. He has experience in commercial insurance, executive risks including directors and officer’s coverage, and complex risk management for corporations. Zgutowicz has 11 years of industry experience, previously working at Arch Capital and AIG as an underwriter and at Arthur Andersen as a financial consultant.

Coury, formerly with Aon for 10 years, got her start in the insurance business handling management liability claims before turning to the brokerage side of the business eight years ago. She has 15 years of industry experience, previously working at Aon, Jenner & Block, and Kirkland & Ellis.

The Motorists Insurance Group, based in Columbus, Ohio, appointed Executive Vice President David L. Kaufman as chief operating officer.

Kaufman joined Motorists in 1986 and has served as actuarial manager and vice president, vice president of commercial lines, vice president of information technology and chief information officer. He also previously served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at American Hardware Mutual Insurance Co., an affiliate of The Motorists Insurance Group.

Kaufman also serves as a member of the boards of directors for Motorists Mutual, Motorists Life, Iowa Mutual, Wilson Mutual and American Hardware Mutual. He is expected to be elected to the board of directors for Phenix Mutual.

All group operations will be consolidated under Kaufman, who will also retain his title of executive vice president.

Now reporting directly to Kaufman will be Senior Vice President and Secretary Susan Haack, who also was recently named chief risk officer; and Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Michael Wiseman.
