Cincinnati-based Great American Insurance Group’s corporate claims division hired Emmet M. Murphy as vice president responsible for the environmental claims unit.Murphy joins Great American from The Hartford and its complex claims group where he most recently held the title of assistant vice president and senior counsel. He has 21 years of claims and management experience.

North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm has been elected vice president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The three other recently elected 2012 NAIC officers are: President Kevin M. McCarty, Florida Insurance Commissioner; President-Elect James J. Donelon, Louisiana Insurance Commissioner; and Secretary-Treasurer Monica J. Lindeen, Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance.

Kevin R. Wolff has joined the legal department of property and casualty insurance wholesaler Swett & Crawford as deputy general counsel. During his 20-year legal career with law firms and as in-house counsel, he developed particular expertise in litigation, labor and employment law and alternative dispute resolution.

He reports to Elizabeth Ann Edelman, general counsel, secretary and executive vice president.

Wisconsin-based United Heartland has appointed Curt LeBeau vice president of insurance operations. LeBeau is responsible for the company’s corporate underwriting, underwriting support services, premium billing/audit and data analysis functions.

He has 35 years of experience in the insurance industry. LeBeau came to United Heartland from Wausau Insurance Companies where he served in a variety of capacities for the past 21 years, most recently as regional vice president of underwriting. Other roles with Wausau include vice president of program operations, vice president of operations, regional underwriting manager and home office underwriting manager.

LeBeau is certified as a Construction Risk Insurance Specialist (CRIS).

Willis North America, a unit of global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings plc, has made new appointments to its construction practice.

Ron Phillips and Bryant Steele have been appointed vice presidents in Willis’ construction practice. They will focus on business development in the Midwest region. Phillips brings 13 years of industry experience to the role and previously served as vice president of business development for the construction team at Aon Corp.

Steele brings more than five years’ experience to the role and previously served as account executive at Aon Corp.

Phillips and Steele are based in Chicago.

Zurich announced that Jim Dowdy will add responsibility for its North America railroad insurance practice in addition to overseeing Zurich’s specialty lines property business.

The company also appointed Ron Mathewson and Gary Linde as casualty underwriters supporting the railroad business.

Dowdy joined Zurich in January 2010. He previously served as senior vice president for Ironshore Insurance Services and has held a variety of different leadership positions in the insurance industry over the past 30 years.

Mathewson joins Zurich from Chartis Excess Casualty where he was national practice leader for their railroad business. He holds the Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.

Linde joins Zurich from Odyssey Reinsurance Corp. where he served as assistant vice president in support of rail insurers for facultative reinsurance.
