State insurance regulators have named 28 consumer representatives to advise them on insurance issues during 2012. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) said the 18 funded and 10 unfunded consumer representatives begin their terms Jan. 1, 2012. Fifteen of the funded consumer representatives participated in the program in 2011, while three are new to the NAIC program.

“The representatives provide valuable perspectives and expertise that help improve the insurance regulatory system for all consumers,” said Kevin M. McCarty, NAIC president-elect and Florida insurance commissioner. The following are the 2012 NAIC funded consumer liaison representatives:

  • Elizabeth Abbott: project director, Health Access
  • Amy Bach: executive director, United Policyholders
  • Deeia Beck: public counsel, Office of Public Insurance Counsel/Texas
  • Brendan M. Bridgeland: director, Center for Insurance Research
  • Bonnie Burns: training and policy specialist, California Health Advocate
  • Sabrina Corlette: research professor, Georgetown University Health Policy Institute
  • Brenda J. Cude: professor, University of Georgia
  • Joseph P. Ditre’: executive director, Consumers for Affordable Health Care
  • Timothy Stoltzfus Jost: professor, Washington and Lee University School of Law
  • Kathleen Gmeiner: project director, UHCAN Ohio
  • Karrol Kitt: associate professor, University of Texas at Austin
  • Peter Kochenburger: executive director, Insurance Law Center, University of Connecticut School of Law
  • Sonja L. Larkin-Thorne: consumer advocate, Avon, Conn.
  • Sarah Lueck: health policy analyst, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
  • Jennifer Mishory: deputy director, Young Invincibles
  • Andrea J. Routh: Missouri Health Advocacy Alliance
  • Daniel Schwarcz: associate professor of Law, University of Minnesota Law School
  • Barbara Yondorf: president: Colorado Consumer Health Initiative

In addition, there are 10 unfunded consumer reps:

  • Marguerite Herman: consumer advocate, Project Healthcare
  • Adam Linker: health policy analyst, North Carolina Justice Center
  • Stephanie Mohl: government relations manager, American Heart Association
  • Lynn Quincy: senior policy analyst, Consumers Union
  • Stuart Spielman: senior policy advisor and counsel, Autism Speaks
  • Cindy Zeldin: executive director, Georgians for a Healthy Future

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) has named G. Donovan Brown its new counsel and regional manager for Florida. Brown takes on the government relations role at PCI after a decade in government and law. He comes to PCI from Foley & Lardner LLP, where he was an associate. In that position, he represented clients on matters pending before the Florida legislature, the Office of Insurance Regulation and the Department of Financial Services. Previously, he was an associate at Akerman Senterfitt LLP, and prior to his legal career, he served as a special assistant to Gov. Jeb Bush.

Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman and CEO of Starr Companies, was awarded the Lifetime of Leadership Award from the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute, Yale School of Management. The award was presented by John Whitehead, the former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs, at the Yale CEO Summit of The Chief Executive Leadership Institute.

In addition to serving as chairman and CEO of Starr Companies, Greenberg is also chairman of The Starr Foundation, a supporter of academic, medical, cultural, and public policy institutions.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, senior associate dean at the Yale School of Management, commented that “Hank Greenberg has had a long prescient model of the globalization of the world’s markets and the particular engines of growth in Asia and specifically China.”

“He has fostered greater awareness of shared economic interests while furthering diplomatic, cultural, and educational advancement. He is easily one of the most recognized and revered business leader names globally while also an inspiring model of entrepreneurship and courage in explaining his pioneering business models and fortifying his reputation.”

The dean said Greenberg has also been instrumental in advancing Yale’s international outreach efforts. Greenberg is active in a number of civic and charitable organizations, including serving as honorary vice chairman and director of the Council on Foreign Relations, vice chairman for the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and board member of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and New York University.
