American International Group Inc.named Gaurav D. Garg as chief executive officer, Personal Insurance. The appointment marks the return of Garg to AIG, where he held various personal insurance roles for 12 years before joining Mercer in 2012. At Mercer, he has been serving as president and senior partner, Growth Markets Region.

Garg will lead a team within Consumer Insurance and oversee all aspects of the Personal Insurance business, including auto, personal accident, and personal property lines as well as service programs including extended warranty and travel insurance products and services.

He will report to Kevin Hogan, CEO of Global Consumer Insurance, who rejoined AIG from Zurich in 2013.

Thomas D. Rutherfoord, Jr., chairman of insurance brokerage Rutherfoord, a Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC company, announced his retirement after more than 40 years of leadership and service at the Richmond, Virginia-based firm.

Rutherfoord joined the family business as the third generation to work in the insurance industry in 1971. He led his firm’s Alexandria, Virginia, office until 1986 at which time he was named president of the firm. He was instrumental in the growth of Rutherfoord’s brand throughout Virginia and other states in the region, the brokerage said in the announcement. Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC acquired the Rutherfoord firm in 2010.

Reinsurance broker JLT Re appointed Ed Hochberg as CEO of JLT Re in North America. Hochberg served as global head of Analytics, Banking and Advisory at JLT Re, having joined as part of the 2013 Towers Watson Re acquisition.

He will retain the responsibilities for his role as global head of Analytics, Banking and Advisory until a replacement is appointed in the near future. He will report to Mike Reynolds, global CEO of JLT Re.

Matt Parker is succeeding Greg Thompson as president of Markel Specialty. Parker, who most recently served as managing executive, Markel FirstComp, joined Markel in 2010 when Markel acquired FirstComp. Parker will continue to be based in Markel’s Cranston, Rhode Island, office and will report directly to F. Michael Crowley, president and co-chief operating officer of Markel Corp.

Thompson will assume a new role with Markel supporting the growth of the company’s program administrator business, working out of Markel’s Kennesaw, Georgia, office.

The Arbella Insurance Group in Quincy, Massachusetts, promoted four members of its executive team.

Eileen Currie has been promoted to senior vice president of commercial lines, from vice president of commercial lines. Currie has been serving as head of commercial lines for past six years and will continue to manage all commercial lines activities at Arbella Insurance.

Jim Hyatt has been promoted to senior vice president of personal lines, from vice president of personal lines. Hyatt will continue to oversee all personal lines activities at Arbella Insurance.

Gayle O’Connell has been promoted to executive vice president and chief marketing officer, from senior vice president of human resources and corporate communications. O’Connell will oversee the sales and marketing functions in addition to her current responsibilities leading human resources and corporate communications.

Beverly Tangvik has been promoted to president of the Arbella Insurance Charitable Foundation, from assistant vice president and director of charitable giving at Arbella Insurance.

The MEMIC Group, a workers’ compensation insurer based in Portland, Maine, promoted Daniel J. McGarvey to the newly created position of chief operating officer.

McGarvey is based in The MEMIC Group’s Portland headquarters. He has been serving as senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer since joining MEMIC in 2009. In his new role as COO, McGarvey will oversee MEMIC’s financial accounting operation including premium audit and premium billing as well as the group’s claims department. The MEMIC Group said McGarvey will keep the responsibilities of his old position so there will be no new appointment to CFO.

AmWINS Brokerage of the Mid Atlantic hired John Carlsen as senior vice president.

Prior to joining AmWINS, he was executive vice president with NAPCO LLC, where he was employed for the past 17 years. Carlsen will be focusing on the production and marketing of shared and layered property programs, and will be based out of Edison, New Jersey.

In addition, AmWINS Brokerage of New York hired Jason Monteforte as senior vice president. Monteforte will be focusing on primary and excess casualty business, and will be based out of New York City.

Prior to joining AmWINS, Monteforte was senior vice president with R-T Specialty and has also worked for Arrowhead General, Marsh & McLennan, Liberty Mutual and AIG.
