Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration announced the appointment of Daniel R. Judson as new commissioner at the Massachusetts Division of Insurance.

Judson succeeds Joseph Murphy who stepped down from the post in December to join Coverys, a Boston-based provider of medical professional liability insurance and related services, as chief operating officer.

Judson is an attorney with over 25 years of experience in insurance in both the public and private sectors. He has been serving as president of Commonwealth Automobile Reinsurers, the high-risk pool for auto insurance in Massachusetts, for the last three years.

His prior experience includes serving as the compliance manager at Coverys and as a partner at the law firm of Morrison Mahoney LLP. Judson also spent 15 years at the Massachusetts Division of Insurance in a variety of positions including counsel, deputy commissioner and general counsel.

American International Group Inc. named Douglas M. Steenland as the company’s non-executive chairman effective July 1. Steenland will be AIG’s seventh chairman since 2005.

Steenland, the former CEO of Northwest Airlines Corp., succeeds Steve Miller, who is stepping down because of a guideline that limits the chairmanship tenure to no more than five years. Miller, who joined the AIG board with Steenland in 2009, will remain as a director at AIG.

Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Katharine L. Wade appointed John Thomson, director of the Connecticut Insurance Department’s Captive Insurance Regulation Division, as the Department’s deputy commissioner.

Thomson joined the Department in 2012 to develop a new Captive Insurance Unit. In those three years, the unit has licensed eight captive insurers and registered more than 180 risk retention groups. Thomson also manages the operations of the Department’s Business Office and is the Department’s LEAN Coordinator, overseeing the integration of efficient, cost-saving procedures.

Kletzli joins Schinnerer from AIG where he spent the last 17 years in various roles spanning underwriting, management, and regional leadership. Most recently, he served as the head of the Multinational Risk Practice for Latin America. Prior to his multinational role, he was vice president of financial lines for the private and not-for-profit division with national and international responsibilities.
