U.S. Risk Insurance Group Inc. named Brian Edwards a senior broker in the Dallas office of U.S. Risk Brokers Inc.

Edwards has more than 12 years of experience in the insurance industry. He specializes in brokerage of excess and surplus (E&S) commercial property risks with an emphasis on the hospitality industry.

At U.S. Risk, Edwards will continue to focus on ground-up and shared/layered placement of a wide variety of commercial real estate and inland marine exposures across the country.

Joanna M. Tollenaere joins Texas-based independent insurance brokerage firm Roach Howard Smith & Barton as a commercial sales executive.

She will focus on developing new client relationships and strategic partnerships with companies in both the public and private sectors.

Tollenaere brings 13 years’ experience as an attorney where her knowledge from representing clients in commercial litigation; preparation, review and negotiation of contracts; insurance defense and coverage litigation will be significant in her role at RHSB providing clients solutions to meet corporate objectives and reduce their total cost of risk.

RHSB has offices in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.

Kimberly El Amrani received The Matt Wells Scholarship for The National Alliance Producer School in Tallahassee, Fla.

El Amrani is the principal owner/agent with Prime Insurance Group LLC, in Henrico, Va.

Selected for her high potential for leadership and success as a producer, El Amrani personifies the values of professional development and continuing education.

This special scholarship, founded in 2003 by Mark Wells, editor, publisher and chairman of Wells Media Group Inc., honors the legacy of his son, Matt Wells.

Insurance Journal, part of the Wells Media Group network, grants these special scholarships in partnership with Austin-based National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.

The scholarship, granted for each Producer School, provides full tuition, a $2,500 value, covering materials, instruction and pre/post course work.

Dan Ramsey, a former state representative and director of the Oklahoma association of independent insurance agents has been appointed to the board of director of Oklahoma workers’ compensation insurer, CompSource Mutual Insurance Co.

Ramsey will begin serving a seven-year term in July after the term of board member James Cases expires in June.

Ramsey is currently an agency mentor for the Oklahoma Agents Alliance. He previously spent 16 years as president and chief executive officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of Oklahoma. Before that he worked 22 years as an independent insurance agent.

He served two terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, from 1994-1998, representing Grady County.

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) Education Foundation awarded $21,000 in academic scholarships to 26 students at five Texas universities.

The students attend the University of Houston Downtown, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Southern University in Houston, the University of Houston-Main campus and the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

The recognized students are either seeking a degree in insurance or risk management or taking courses in the subject.

Each student received a scholarship and will be invited to attend ICT’s annual Mid-Year Symposium in Austin on July 9, where insurance industry leaders gather to hear an update on the Texas marketplace. Each year, all Symposium corporate sponsorships and individual donations go to the ICT scholarships and school funding.

ICT scholarship recipients at the University of Houston Downtown, under Dr. Wendall Braniff, were Cory Lacy, Jovana Lopez, Malinda Beckham, Matthew Maxwell, Moises Ruiz, Rachel Depue, Theresa Epstein, Saul Hernandez and Julie Braun.

ICT scholarship recipients at the University of Texas at San Antonio, under Professor Ron Sweet, were Tim Breidenbach, Ryan Himmelberg, Charlotte Huso, Jesse Spriggs and Kalub Stutts.

ICT scholarship recipients at Texas Southern University, under Dr. Zahid Iqpal, were Prussia Clayton and Caleb Carr.

ICT scholarships at the University of Houston Main, under Professor Mack Rogers, were Kelli Evans, Douglas Ferman, Christen Sawyer, Elizabeth Tolmachoff and Krystal Villarreal.

ICT scholarships at the University of Texas Pan American, under Dr. K. Steven Lovell, were Alex Rocha, Amy Siefer, Daniel Padilla, Erik Diaz and Sofia Ayala.

Since 2002, the Insurance Council of Texas Education Foundation has awarded $778,500 to 11 Texas universities and 373 insurance and risk management students.
