Wilson, Newman Receive Top Awards During YBA Conference

July 2, 2002

Brad Wilson, president of Wilson Insurance Agency in Chula Vista, California, was honored with the Ronald Lee Wilson Award at the Young Brokers and Agents Conference in Reno.

The award was created by Bill Wilson in memory of his son and has been presented each year since 1980 to the “most outstanding young broker or agent” from California, Hawaii, Nevada or the Pacific Northwest.

“The committee decided on Wilson because of his long time commitment to not only the insurance industry but to his community,” said YBA Committee vice chair C. Lou Partee, AIS. “Wilson is a good example to other young agents of the importance of being involved and a good representative to the public of who an independent insurance agent is.”

Currently serving on the board of IBA San Diego and IBA West, Wilson’s career also heralds involvement with the Chula Vista Rotary, Chula Vista Corps, the Citizen’s Oversight Committee for the Chula Vista Elementary School District and Washington-Lincoln Laurels for Leaders. Wilson is also past president of both the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce and Salvation Army. He served for two years as Chair of the San Diego Young Agents and on the state Young Brokers and Agents Committee for three years.

Jeff Newman of Gelfand, Newman, Wasserman in Los Angeles was the recipient of the Harlan Miller Scholarship Award, allowing the honoree to attend the upcoming Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Established in 1995, the scholarship was created in honor of Harlan Miller for his past service as IIABA president.

“It was hard to choose from many worthy candidates, but the committee came to the decision of Jeff Newman based not only on an impressive political background but on a personal recommendation,” Partee said.

In 1992, Newman started the Los Angeles Young Agents Committee and was chair for six years. He was also on the state Young Brokers and Agents Committee for three years and chaired that committee for one year. He is the immediate past president for the Independent Insurance Agents of Los Angeles. He currently is serving his third year on the national Young Agents Committee and serves on the IBA West Board of Directors.
