NYDI Orders Policy Reinstatement For Livery Cabs

June 18, 2001

The ongoing controversy over policy cancellations and non-renewals of coverage for New York’s livery cab services took a new turn on Friday when Insurance Department Superintendent Gregory Serio ordered Sureco National Insurance Co. to renew more than 2000 policies.

Sureco has been refusing to renew coverage which was in force last year, and Serio said his decision to order reinstatement was a first step towards assuring that all livery drivers were fully covered. Any drivers affected can now apply for renewals at “livery car rates.” They are required to provide proof of eligibility within 20 days after reinstatement.

Serio added that the department would continue to monitor the situation in the livery cab industry, and had also prepared an order that Highlands Insurance Group renew approximately 5000 of the 9,000 livery cab policies it has canceled by August 7th, providing it receives premium payments.
