New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is urging New Yorkers to prepare for peak hurricane season.
Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean begins June 1 but New York City is most vulnerable from August to October.
De Blasio handed out “Go bags” filled with supplies last Friday at a community center in a Brooklyn neighborhood hit hard by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
He said that extreme storms will likely grow more common in the coming years due to climate change.
The mayor said New Yorkers should know whether they live in an evacuation zone and, if so, which one. And they should learn their evacuation routes.
Sandy killed more than 40 city residents.
Several neighborhoods — including Red Hook, where de Blasio spoke — are still rebuilding.
