School Bus Crash in Upstate New York; Five Children, Two Adults Injured

February 26, 2020

Five children aged six to 17 and two adults were injured in a school bus accident Thursday about 60 miles northwest of New York City, according to state police.

Troopers said a pick-up truck apparently rear-ended the eastbound bus on Route 17, pushing into the guide rail, which caused it to flip on its side. The mini-bus was traveling from Fallsburg to a BOCES facility in neighboring Orange County when it was struck around 7:45 a.m. in the town of Mamakating.

Police described the injuries to the children and two bus monitors as minor. The children were treated and released at a local hospital. Neither driver was injured.

The unidentified 57-year-old driver of the pick-up truck was issued a traffic violation for following too closely.

Route 17 east was closed between exits 112 and 113 as the investigation continued.
