Hilb Group Founder Takes Helm at Choice Financial

Virginia insurance agency Choice Financial Group has appointed insurance veteran Robert J. Hilb as chief executive officer following the retirement of J. Richard Braun, founder and president of Choice.

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Hilb was serving as a member of the board of directors and head of mergers and acquisitions at Choice. Hilb has more than 35 years of insurance industry experience, including founding and serving as CEO of Hilb Group. During his tenure at Hilb Group, he led the M&A function, closing more than 50 transactions.

Hilb said his role will include continuing Choice Financial’s active M&A strategy.

Choice is headquartered in Virginia Beach and has 18 offices in eight states. The firm is backed by Northlane Capital Partners, a middle-market private equity firm.

Crum & Forster Credit Division Appoints Kovalsky

Crum & Forster’s credit division announced the appointment of Drew M. Kovalsky as vice president and credit underwriter.

Kovalsky is responsible for the research, evaluation and underwriting of Crum & Forster’s credit insurance and alternative risk finance products for North American customers and other select jurisdictions, including single situation credit and multi-buyer trade credit insurance, as well as alternative risk finance.

Kovalsky has nearly 20 years’ experience as a credit analyst. His expertise focuses on origination and underwriting of transactional credit solutions for varied asset classes, underwriting structured finance, project finance, infrastructure-related credits and municipal enterprises.

Most recently, Kovalsky was vice president and credit analyst with Assured Guaranty for more than 15 years where he was responsible for overseeing credit evaluation of corporate fixed income classes, as well as credit research for alternative asset-backed finance transactions. Previously, he served with Barclays Capital as manager of its structured credit and complex transactions group and the specialty financial institutions group. These roles followed prior positions as an analyst with Moody’s Investor Service and Bank of America.

Kovalsky will be based in New York and will report to Donald Asadorian, senior vice president of the credit division.).

Cross Insurance Names Randlett as Corporate Counsel

Northeast independent agency Cross Insurance has named Joshua Randlett as vice president and corporate counsel. He will be based at Cross Insurance headquarters in Bangor, Maine.

In his new role, Randlett will be working as part of the in-house legal team on corporate, transactional, employment, and regulatory related matters.

Most recently, Randlett was a judge of the Maine District Court. Prior to that, he was a partner at the Rudman Winchell law firm in Bangor, where his practice focused on employment law and litigation and personal injury defense, as well as cases related to business, commercial and real estate disputes. He was chair of the litigation department and was the partner in charge of overseeing professional responsibility and risk management for the firm.

Cross Insurance has grown extensively through the acquisition of more than 120 insurance agencies throughout the Northeast. The company now has 1,000 employees operating out of offices in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and Florida.
