Massachusetts Man Sentenced in Luxury Car Insurance Fraud Scheme

May 3, 2023

A Holbrook, Massachusetts man has been found guilty and sentenced to two and a half years in the Norfolk House of Correction for damaging luxury cars bought under false pretenses in order to collect insurance proceeds.

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced that Dion Augustin pleaded guilty in March 2023 in Norfolk Superior Court to larceny and motor vehicle insurance fraud.

In July 2020, Augustin was indicted by a grand jury on seven counts of larceny and eight counts of motor vehicle insurance fraud for a fraud scheme that he perpetrated between August 2016 and May 2017. The indictments alleged that Augustin obtained motor vehicle loans for luxury vehicles—including a Bentley, a Maserati, and two Fisker Karmas—by misrepresenting his own creditworthiness and that of several “straw” purchasers. After securing insurance on the luxury vehicles, Augustin then deliberately staged motor vehicle collisions. He reported the collision to the police and insurance company as accidental and caused the insurance carriers to declare a total loss.

Court documents allege Augustin stole more than $136,000 from lenders and caused more than $201,000 in loss to the insurance carriers.

Superior Court Judge Douglas Wilkins sentenced Augustin to two and a half years in prison, followed by two years of probation. Augustin will also pay restitution in an amount to be determined at a later hearing.

The AG’s Office began its investigation after a referral from the Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts.
