Violent Spring Noreaster Takes At Least 4 Lives

A violent storm that hit the Northeast the past two days has taken the lives of at least four people, three of whom were killed when uprooted trees crashed into their vehicles.

Heavy rains and snow along with winds as high as 60 mph were reported in some areas. Communities from New York to Maine were under coastal flood warnings and watches.

As many as 700,000 homes and businesses lost power, with Maine and New Hampshire feeling the brunt, The Associated Press reported.

A house explosion and fire in Derry, New Hampshire killed one woman and injured a child. Derry Fire Chief Shawn Haggart said that when firefighters first arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the single-family home. The firefighters found the deceased victim in the driveway. The child was transported to Parkland Hospital and then transferred to a Boston area hospital for medical treatment.

The fire and explosion are being investigated. Photos showed that a tree had apparently fallen on the home and a nearby propane tank.

Two people died in Pennsylvania when cars fell on their vehicles while they were driving, ABC TV reported. Firefighters responded to a downed tree on a car on Pennell Road in Delaware Count. Officials said the victim was driving when his car was hit by a falling tree. A similar incident happened in Collegeville in Montgomery County, when a tree crushed the car of a driver as she was stopped at a red light along Main Street.

Another woman died in New York’s Westchester County as an uprooted tree crashed onto her car along the Route 128 near Armonk, CBS New York reported.
