13 People Rescued From Syracuse Home That Collapsed

First responders believe they have accounted for all 13 people who might have been in a Syracuse two-family home that collapsed yesterday.

Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds said 11 children and adults were injured and rushed to Upstate University Hospital, a umber of them with serious injuries. Two others have been accounted for as well.

Fire crews responded to several 911 calls that came in shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday from neighbors reporting what they said sounded like an explosion at 205 Carbon St.

Monds said when they arrived, firefighters found several victims outside. He said firefighters rescued one youth out of a car that was covered in debris from the home.

“The building was indeed collapsed,” Monds said. “It was a very dangerous scene. There were power lines down and the dangerous odor of gas.”

Monds said search and rescue efforts were slowed due to concerns about the structural stability of the house. Firefighters worked to fortify the home before completing searches inside.

The more than 50 firefighters who responded to the collapse had to battle the extreme temperatures that have hit Syracuse.

The cause of the house collapse is unknown at this time and an investigation is underway.

The gas company National Grid told ABC-TV news that there had not been any reports of gas leaks.
