Vermont Again Dealing With Floodwaters

July 30, 2024

Northern Vermont today is dealing with flash floods and washed-out roads after a night and early morning of extreme rainfall.

Parts of Caledonia county and the Northeast Kingdom received 6-8 inches of rain last night and saw considerable catastrophic flash flooding, state officials said.

According to Vermont Emergency Management officials, 10 swiftwater rescue teams were dispatched to the area overnight and have conducted about two dozen rescues from flooded areas. Those teams are still in the area to respond to calls for assistance.

“Isolated strong thunderstorms and embedded downpours could result in more flooding and localized strong to damaging wind gusts this afternoon into evening,” state officials reported.

Flash flood warnings remain in effect for Caledonia and Essex counties.

The National Weather Service said the worst-hit areas are around Danville, St. Johnsbury and Morgan Center where there have been 6-7 inches of rainfall since midnight.

The National Weather Service also said there is the possibility of additional damaging storms today and possibly some isolated hail.

On Wednesday, more moderate to heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day.

Earlier this month, Vermonters were hit with flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. Two people were killed and there were reports of damaged homes, knocked out bridges, landslides and washed out roads. That event happened a year to the day of last July’s catastrophic flooding that left some victims still awaiting home repairs.
