Massachusetts Governor Healey Names Caljouw as Insurance Commissioner

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced the appointment of Michael T. Caljouw as state’s new insurance commissioner.

Caljouw comes to DOI with 33 years of experience in insurance law and policy in the state, including most recently as government affairs vice president for Blue Cross Blue Shield and previously as general counsel and deputy director for the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, which oversees the Division of Insurance.

Caljouw succeeds Gary D. Anderson, who assumed a new role as chief executive of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in May. Anderson was appointed as insurance commissioner in 2017 by former Gov. Charlie Baker.

During the course of his career in the public and private insurance sectors, Caljouw has worked on insolvency and cost containment laws, insurance rate decisions, and the review of major insurance mergers and acquisitions across all lines of the insurance business.

Caljouw serves as the chairman of the board of the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy. He is a former board member of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, Massachusetts Health Policy Forum, Massachusetts Health Policy Commission, and Associated Industries of Massachusetts.

The insurance department is responsible for overseeing and monitoring an approximately $70 billion industry with more than 1,400 licensed insurance companies and approximately 200,000 individual licensed insurance producers.
