PartnerRe Names Thiele To Succeed Retiring Haag

The Board of Directors of Bermuda-based PartnerRe. Ltd. has selected Patrick Thiele to succeed Herbert Haag, who founded the company in 1993, as President and CEO effective upon his retirement December 1st.

Board Chairman David McLauglin praised Haag, who has guided Partner Re’s expansion over the last 7 years, saying, “It was with great regret that we learned of Herbert Haag’s desire to step down from his position as President & CEO in order to pursue his many personal interests. As the chief architect of PartnerRe’s development into a world-leading multi-line reinsurer, he has carefully steered the Company along a clear strategic path, succeeded in attracting a top class management team and built a premier franchise.”

Thiele leaves his current post as Group Director for Development at CGNU to join PartnerRe. He was previously President & CEO of The St. Paul Company’s worldwide insurance operations.

Haag, who left Swiss Re after 24 years to organize PartnerRe, will be a tough act to follow, but Thiele brings a great deal of experience to the post. He recently oversaw CGNU’s sale of its U.S. operations and was responsible for strategic planning, notably in n the field of e-commerce.

“This organization has increasingly assumed the scale, financial strength and expertise needed to reinforce its position as one of the leaders in global reinsurance, ” Thiele stated.
