Switzerland’s Winterthur Insurance Group became the first private corporate donor to the United Nations fund to fight the AIDS epidemic, pledging a donation of $1 million.
Winterthur, the insurance arm of the Credit Suisse, plans to deliver the money next month in a public ceremony.
L
aunched by U.N. Secretary-general Kofi Annan in April, the fund hopes to eventually raise $10 billion to help poor countries, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa cope with the AIDS scourge, as well as other infectious diseases currently ravaging the continent.
