MMC announced that Sir Peter Middleton has been appointed to the new role of MMC UK Chairman. He will continue as the non-executive Chairman of Marsh Ltd, a position he took up in July 2005. He will also remain a member of MMC’s International Advisory Board.
“Sir Peter’s distinguished career includes senior positions in both the public and private sectors,” the bulletin said. He began his career with the UK’s Treasury Department, and was appointed Permanent Secretary in 1983.
Middleton retired from the Civil Service in 1991 to become Deputy Chairman of Barclays Group and Chairman of Barclays Investment Bank, where he eventually became CEO and later Group Chairman of Barclays plc.
He will work with colleagues in MMC’s UK operations (Marsh, Mercer, Kroll, Guy Carpenter and Mercer Specialty Consulting) to leverage client relationships across its businesses. His focus will be on developing and deepening relationships with major UK clients.
He will report to MMC Vice Chairman Mathis Cabiallavetta, the head of MMC International, who indicated how pleased MMC was to have “someone with a background as distinguished as Sir Peter’s.”
Middleton noted: “Businesses, internationally, are facing increasingly complex human capital issues and a risk environment characterised by growing interdependence. The companies that succeed in managing these risks effectively, taking a co-ordinated approach across their organisations, will enjoy a significant competitive advantage.” He also said he was looking forward to his new role with MMC
