Marsh’s Matanle to Succeed Douetil as Lloyd’s Reform Group Head

October 19, 2007

Stephen Matanle, Global Placement Leader at Marsh and chairman of the London Market Insurance Brokers’ Committee (LMBC), is to become Chairman of the London Market Reform Group (MRG). He will take over from Brit Insurance CEO Dane Douetil CBE at the end of the year, and will step down as LMBC Chairman on assuming his new position.

Douetil commented: “When I accepted the role of MRG chairman I said I was picking up the baton of reform on behalf of the market as a whole. This program is a team effort to deliver the necessary change to make London the market of choice for global insurance and it is important it does not become viewed as a personal crusade. Accordingly, after two years in the chair – during which I am very proud to have been part of truly significant market achievements – I believe the time is right to pass on the baton.”

He also praised Matanle’s efforts in furtherance of the reform group’s objectives, and said he was “delighted” to see him take over. Douetil noted that while the MRG has accomplished a lot, there remains “much to do.” He also expressed “my gratitude to my MRG colleagues for their support over the past two years,” adding that they stood ready to assist Matanle.

Matanle appeared equally pleased to accept his new post, indicating that he is “looking forward to working with other members to bring about the necessary reform that ensures London remains the world’s leading insurance market. As the key forum driving the collaboration needed to get this done, MRG has an opportunity over the next two to three years to shape London’s future role in the global insurance market. I am excited to be a part of that.”

Lloyd’s Chief Executive Richard Ward thanked Douetil for his “contribution to the reform effort during his time as chair of MRG.” He also noted that there had been significant progress “over the last two years to improve the efficiency of the market,” and expressed confidence in Matanle’s ability to “continue this work.” Ward also noted that his “background as a broker will also prove essential in continuing to galvanize support from that sector going forward.”

Stephen Riley, Chairman of London’s International Underwriting Association (IUA) added his praise for Douetil efforts and “well – focused energy to the job of chairing MRG.” He expressed his confidence that Matanle “will continue this good work;” adding “with the support of the company market, the Group has a vital role to play in delivering our vision of London as the market of choice.”
