Baugh to Replace Glaser at AIG UK; Portalatin, Hernandez Move Up

Following the departure of Daniel Glaser to Head Marsh (See related article), American International Group announced the promotion of three executives in its Foreign General insurance operations.

Alexander R. Baugh will succeed Glaser as Managing Director of AIG UK Limited and Regional President of Foreign General’s UK/Ireland Division. He is responsible for the general insurance operations of American International Underwriters (AIU) in the UK and Ireland, based in London. AIU is AIG’s international property-casualty insurance organization.

Baugh joined AIU in 1983 as a financial lines underwriter. He subsequently held a succession of positions with AIU in New York, London and Paris and was most recently President of AIG Europe, S.A., and President of AIU’s Continental European Region. He has also held various positions in AIG’s Domestic Brokerage Group. Baugh is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

AIG Senior Vice President Julio A. Portalatin will succeed Baugh as President of AIG Europe, S.A., and President of AIU’s Continental European Region, based in Paris. He has served as President of the AIU Accident and Health Division since 2002. Prior to that, he served in New York as President of AIU Personal Lines Division; in Mexico as AIU Latin America Division Regional Vice President and General Manager of Seguros Interamericana, S.A., AIG’s Mexican property and casualty insurance company; and in New York as AIU Latin America Division Executive Vice President. He joined the AIG companies in 1993 as a Lexington Insurance Company Vice President. He was elected Vice President, Foreign General Insurance of AIG in 2001, and Senior Vice President in January 2007. He is a graduate of Hofstra University.

Jose A. Hernandez, who is currently Chief Operating Officer of AIU’s Accident & Health Division, will succeed Portalatin as President. He joined AIG in 1994 as Commercial Lines Manager of AIG’s Seguros Interamericana, S.A., in Mexico. He was named Vice President, AIU Latin America Division in 1997 and later General Manager of AIG Mexico Seguros Interamericana, S.A., in 1998. He was named Senior Vice President, AIU Accident & Health, in 2001 and in 2003 moved to Japan, where he was Far East Regional Vice President, AIU Accident & Health Division. He is a graduate of Bentley College.

Nicholas Walsh, Executive Vice President, Foreign General Insurance and President, American International Underwriters, noted that the three executives have been instrumental in the strong performance of AIG’s foreign general operations. He indicated that “all three bring demonstrated leadership skills developed under AIG’s matrixed management structure.”

AIG President and CEO Martin J. Sullivan commented: “Our ability to draw upon such talented executives within our ranks demonstrates the depth and breadth of AIG’s accomplished management team.”
