XL Holds ‘Global Day of Giving’

May 21, 2008

Bermuda’s XL Capital Ltd. is holding its third annual employee volunteer day — known as the “Global Day of Giving” — today Wednesday, May 21. The day is dedicated to supporting the communities in which XL companies operate.

XL said its “employees have donated thousands of hours of community service to hundreds of charitable projects in various locations worldwide since the Global Day of Giving began in 2006 during the Company’s 20th anniversary.”

CEO Michael S. McGavick explained: “The Global Day of Giving is an important opportunity for those of us at XL to take time away from our business lives and give back to the communities in which we live and work. It is important to note that this day is but a momentary reflection of the many ways, both large and small, in which our colleagues serve their communities throughout the year.”

A sampling of the charitable initiatives XL is undertaking includes the following:
— Hamilton, Bermuda (XL’s global headquarters) — Removing invasive tree species at a nature reserve, refurbishing a room at the Salvation Army and assisting with restoration work at a local historical site.
— Sao Paulo, Brazil — Providing food and other assistance to elderly residents of the “Abrigo dos Velhinhos Frederico Ozanan” shelter.
— Beijing, China — Supporting a local school for migrant workers’ children and working with the students on various educational, art and sporting activities.
— Le Mans, France — Mentoring and educating “at risk” youth by coordinating activities for the day and assisting a local charity with gathering food donations and supplies for needy families.
— Gurgaon, India — Partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build homes and assisting the SOS Children’s Villages, an organization committed to caring for orphaned and abandoned children, by overseeing educational activities.
— New York, New York — Lending a hand at the New York Foundling Hospital where a playroom and visiting room will be refurbished and participating in landscaping and gardening tasks at the Veterans’ Hospital in Brooklyn.
— Exton, Pennsylvania — Tackling various environmental projects aimed at cleaning and sprucing up valuable natural resources at local creeks, a portion of the Appalachian Trail, the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Center and Wilmington’s Bellevue Park.
— Zurich, Switzerland — Assisting mountain farmers in cleaning up woodland and pastures in the Alps, along with landscaping projects and preparing a new blueberry plantation.
— London, UK — Holding a “Student Day” for young people from the city’s disadvantaged areas in east London. The students will be offered advice and coaching tips on finding employment and improving their CVs, and will be provided an overview of the insurance sector.
