CII’s General Insurance Professionalism Task Force ‘Up and Running’

May 13, 2009

The UK’s Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has set up a task force of senior general insurance practitioners to drive higher levels of professionalism within the industry as part of its campaign to raise professional standards.

The task force will develop a common framework for all aspects of professionalism. It will engage the industry in raising standards right across the general insurance sector.

The CII stressed that “task force chair, Barry Smith, CII deputy president and CEO of Fortis Insurance, believes that the inclusion of well known and respected industry individuals is vital.”

He explained: “This reflects well on our sector where we are taking a market-led initiative on professionalism to reinforce the value the industry can bring to consumers and the economy. This task force is a clear and potent sign to government and regulators and, more importantly, to the general public that we, as a profession, want to lead the way.”

The first meeting of the task force took place yesterday (11th May) and will meet again soon.

Smith commented: “In these uncertain times general insurance professionals are not immune to the impact of public confidence, making it more important than ever that we adopt the highest standards of professionalism and are clearly seen to be adopting such standards.

“By establishing a practitioner-led task force the CII means to realize significant results, and the status of the insurance industry and the service it provides will be enhanced for the benefit of the consumer and the wider public interest.

“The overarching aim is to see how we can improve the brand image in the general insurance sector.”

CII Chief Executive Dr. Sandy Scott pointed out that the general insurance market had made great strides towards professionalism over the past few years but that surveys of members showed that there is real desire for higher standards and deeper professionalism as compared with other professions. There is also recognition that there is still some way to go to achieve this.

The task force is expected to oversee existing CII initiatives on professionalism as well as develop new thinking and build a market consensus for this program of work. The task force is intended to continue for about two years until progress on professionalism is embedded.
