RMS Warns Tropical Storm Koppu Threatens Southern China

September 14, 2009

Risk Management Solutions is currently tracking the progress of tropical storm Koppu. As of this morning, the storm was located over the South China Sea, approximately 130 miles (210 kms) south southeast of Hong Kong.

Koppu is expected “to continue to track towards the west to northwest and make landfall over the southern coast of China within the next 24 hours,” said RMS. It is expected to intensify slightly over the next 12 hours to reach typhoon status and remain so until it makes landfall, after which it is expected to quickly dissipate.

“Landfall is expected to be near to the city of Yangjiang, located in the southern province of Guangdong, China. The city, with a population around 2.6 million, has several industries located there including hardware knife manufacturing, food processing, light textile and clothing, electromechanical, building material, pharmaceutical, chemical and furniture manufacturing.”

The Hong Kong Observatory has already issued a “Strong Winds Signal for Severe Tropical Storm Koppu. The warning means that winds of between 25 mph and 39 mph (41 and 62 km/hr) are expected for the region, and as the storm intensifies, the associated storm surge poses a threat of flooding to low lying areas.”

RMS said it would continue to monitor Koppu and issue updates accordingly.
