November 3, 2010

The Lloyd’s of London Branch of The Royal British Legion is hoping to raise £150,000 [app. $242,000] for this year’s Poppy Appeal on London Poppy Day, Thursday the 4th of November,

“London Poppy Day is now an annual fundraising initiative, organized by The Lloyd’s Branch of the Royal British Legion, where members of the Lloyd’s community and other industries who have served in the Armed Forces, join forces with ex servicemen and women across London to collect for The Legion’s Poppy Appeal,” the bulletin explained.

“Volunteers together with servicemen and women will collect money at 34 underground and railway stations around the City and West End during both rush hours, as well as in Leadenhall Market during lunchtime where the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas will be playing.”

Mark Drummond-Brady, Chairman of The Lloyd’s Branch of the Royal British Legion, indicated that although London Poppy Day is led by the insurance industry, it also “involves many other firms and organizations in the Square Mile [the City of London] and beyond.

“We raised £60,000 [$96,800] last year – the biggest single day contribution ever made to The Royal British Legion – and this Thursday, with an additional 13 stations covered and in the region of 350 collectors, we hope those who work in the City and West End will help us make an even more significant contribution to the incredibly important work The Legion undertakes,” he stated.

Drummond-Brady also noted that in “2009 we were joined by Forces In Real Estate, and this year we are delighted to welcome the US military alumni in London to the London Poppy Day appeal who are mobilizing more than 40 former and serving US servicemen and women to come and collect alongside us.

The Lloyd’s Royal British Legion branch is now the only remaining trade branch of the Legion. It was formed in 1947 to help members of the Lloyd’s community who were wounded and the families of those who lost their lives in conflicts.

Online donations to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal can also be made.
