European Insurance Forum Kicks Off May 23 in Dublin

May 20, 2011

Around 200 global re/insurance specialists will gather for the European Insurance Forum in Dublin next week to analyze the current state of the industry. Delegates will hear the views of Matthew Elderfield, Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Ireland, and John Bruton, President of IFSC Ireland, as well as regulators and other experts from Europe and further afield.

Europe’s re/insurance industry is “currently at a critical point in the development of its new regulatory regime, Solvency II, and Ireland continues to be strategically involved in the structuring of the proposals,” said the bulletin. In addition the industry is still reeling from the major natural disasters that occurred in the first quarter, as well as the lingering effects of the 2008-09 economic crisis, which has thrown Ireland into recession.

However, one of the brighter spots has been the country’s continued strength in the re/insurance industry, noted Sarah Goddard, CEO of DIMA [Dublin International Insurance and Management Association], which represents re/insurers based in Ireland.

“We have seen consistent growth in the sector throughout the economic crisis, in spite of the domestic issues of recent years,” Goddard noted. “It is important that the factors contributing to that growth remain as fundamentals to the system, and we will be exploring these and related issues during the course of the European Insurance Forum.”

She added: “We will be welcoming some of the leading experts in the international re/insurance sector to this year’s gathering, and examining the global market’s position following the unprecedented spate of catastrophes that have taken place so far in 2011. Losses such as the Japanese earthquake, US tornadoes, Australian floods and New Zealand earthquake are very much the types of catastrophes for which the international re/insurance sector provides support.”

The two-day conference, taking place at the RDS concert hall in Dublin’s Ballsbridge, is a key event in the industry’s annual calendar. This year’s event will examine issues such as reputation risk, the green agenda and corporate governance, as well as the changing regulatory landscape in Europe and further afield.
