Calnan Joins Ironshore Europe to Lead International Offshore Energy Expansion

Bermuda-based Ironshore Europe Ltd. (IEL) announced that Paul Calnan has been named Senior Vice President Global Offshore Energy, responsible for expanding the Global offshore energy business throughout Ironshore International’s platforms.

Ironshore said he will “focus on underwriting first party Offshore Energy risk, including offshore platforms, mobile drilling rigs and exploration, reporting to John Newton, London Branch Manager of IEL and working closely with Peter Coleman in the growth and development of the Global Energy Portfolio.”

Ironshore International’s CEO Mark Wheeler commented: “Ironshore’s expansion to underwrite offshore energy risks from our London office reflects an ongoing commitment to meet the insurance needs of specialty markets that signal opportunities for growth and long-term profitability.”

He added that Calnan was joining a “dedicated team of underwriters and will further strengthen the company’s focus in building a worldwide portfolio of offshore energy business.”

Calnan Has more than 24 years experience as an energy underwriter. He joins IEL after having served with C.V. Starr as Senior Underwriter and International Manager of Exploration and Production with Starr Underwriting Agencies Ltd. in London for five years.

He managed global energy teams to develop an upstream energy portfolio underwritten through offices in London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Houston, Texas. Calnan previously worked as an offshore energy underwriter with Navigators Underwriting Agencies for Syndicate 1221 and a downstream energy underwriter for the Millennium Consortium.

Fiona Marry, CEO of Ironshore Europe Ltd., noted that Calnan’s “recognized expertise will enable Ironshore to enhance its existing energy business portfolio by focusing on the offshore sector, thereby providing customized insurance solutions in response to the global demand for coverage in this specialty sector of the market.”
