Qatar Re Appoints Speare-Cole Chief Underwriting Officer

Qatar Re announced the appointment of Alastair Speare-Cole as Chief Underwriting Officer, effective, January 12, 2015. He joins from JLT Re, the world’s fourth largest reinsurance broker, where he served as CEO since 2012. Speare-Cole replaces Willi Schürch who is retiring from his current role as Chief Underwriting Officer.

Qatar Re’s CEO Gunther Saacke welcomed Speare-Cole to the reinsurer; indicating that “it is a great privilege to have such a high caliber and widely respected reinsurance executive on board. Alastair’s vast experience across all traditional reinsurance lines as well as alternative solutions will further boost the expansion of Qatar Re’s franchise and lend an additional impetus to our aspiration of becoming a leading global reinsurer. In particular, his proven expertise in building and shaping powerful organizations will benefit our rapidly growing company.”

Speare-Cole said: “Since Qatar Re has embarked on its global growth strategy two years ago, the progress made by Gunther and his team has been remarkable. They have built a strong organization with skilled and experienced reinsurance professionals. In addition, Qatar Re has already established a robust foundation in terms of its internal risk management combined with strong client and broker focus. I am excited to become part of this team and contribute my experience to help realize the long- term aspiration of the company.”

Speare-Cole has more than 30 years of experience in reinsurance across all lines of business. He initially started his career as a graduate trainee at Jardine Matheson. He graduated from University of Oxford in Geology and Geophysics. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, a Chartered Insurance Professional and a Fellow of the Geological Society in the UK.

Saacke also thanked Willi Schürch “for his many contributions to Qatar Re;” adding that “thanks to his expertise and experience, Qatar Re has rapidly established a well-balanced portfolio, reflecting both underwriting excellence and discipline. It has been a great pleasure to work with Willi during the final stage of his reinsurance career which spans more than 30 years.
