The latest bulletin from the National Hurricane Center in Miami describes Blanca as a “large hurricane,” with hurricane force winds extending “outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 185 miles (295 km).”
As of 9:00 AM MDT (15:00 UTC), the center of Hurricane Blanca was south of the Baja Peninsula. The storm is “moving toward the northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). A northwestward to north-northwestward motion is expected to continue through Saturday night. On the forecast track, the center of Blanca will approach the southern Baja California peninsula on Sunday.”
The NHC said a “tropical storm or hurricane watch will likely be required for a portion of Baja California Sur later today.
“Maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected tonight and Saturday, but a gradual weakening should begin on Sunday.”
Blanca is expected to cause swells “affecting the coast of southwestern Mexico and will reach the Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula and the southern Gulf of California later today. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”
