Sompo Canopius has appointed Mark Newman as chief executive officer Sompo Canopius Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa. He is based in the Singapore office, reporting to Mike Duffy, chief underwriting officer.
Newman has 30 years in insurance and has lived in Asia for the past 16. He entered insurance with Sedgwick in London and then held roles with Arab Commercial Enterprises in Jeddah and Alexander Howden in London and Mexico before moving to J&H as senior vice president in 1991.
After the company was bought by Marsh, he became leader of the international property team, followed by roles as head of Guy Carpenter Fac Japan and GC Fac Asia Pacific, before being appointed chief operating officer & head of GC Fac Asia Pacific in 2007. From 2008 to 2015 he was CEO of Catlin Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Newman was most recently head of Asia & Deputy CEO Asia Pacific XL Catlin.
Sompo Canopius has had an office in Singapore since 2009 and a long established record of writing business in the wider region, the company said, noting that Newman’s appointment is part of its focus on expanding business in the region.
Linus Phoon continues to be head of reinsurance, Asia.
Duffy commented: “It’s important for us to invest in talented people as we work to move Sompo Canopius onto a more nimble footing. Mark is well known and respected across the Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa markets and he will bring a new level of insight and a different perspective to our business in those areas.”
