AFL Insurance Brokers Launches Marine Division, Hires Mott from Ed to Lead Unit

March 13, 2018

Independent Lloyd’s broker AFL Insurance Brokers Ltd. announced the launch of a commercial marine division, and the appointment of Alex Mott as director of Marine.

A senior marine insurance professional with 16 years of international experience, Mott previously managed the Ed marine broking team as head broker (from January 2016 to February 2018). His career as a Lloyd’s broker and broking team manager has seen him specialize in multiple marine risks, including hull and machinery, disbursements, war risks and protection & indemnity (P&I) insurance.

Prior to his tenure at Ed, he worked as deputy managing director at Edge Brokers (January 2013 – December 2015), according to his LinkedIn profile. Between April 2007 and December 2012, he was broking director, head of hull, at Cooper Gay & Co. (the predecessor of Ed). He also worked as a marine broker at London Special Risks Ltd. from 2002 to 2007, said his profile.

“The launch of a commercial marine division is a logical step for AFL as we continue to grow the business into a full-service intermediary,” said AFL Chairman Toby Esser. “We are responding to increased demand from clients for a modern, proactive approach to processing and placing Marine business, and are delighted that a skilled insurance professional of Alex’s caliber is coming on board.”

“Marine insurance is at the historic heart of the London market, but London’s long-standing roots as a marine hub cannot be taken for granted,” said AFL CEO Bob Finch. “We are committed to developing and adopting the latest technology and modernization initiatives to deliver efficiencies in processing and placing marine business, and maintain London’s position as a global leader in marine insurance.”

“Building AFL into a full service independent broker is a compelling proposition, and I am looking forward to leading the Marine division at this exciting time,” Mott added.

AFL Insurance Brokers has been steadily building out its wholesale and retail capabilities, with recent growth including the appointment of Mike Almond to its corporate division, and the appointments of Barry Rowland and Chris Cavani as directors in the property/casualty businesses, the company said.
