Dunleavy Named Aspen Re’s CUO, Succeeding Issavi Who Moves to Ryan Specialty

Emil Issavi, previously Aspen Re’s president and chief underwriting officer and managing director of the Americas is taking on a new role as a senior executive of Ryan Specialty Group (RSG), RSG Underwriting Managers (RSGUM) and Ryan Re Underwriting Managers, an RSG affiliate company.

A joint announcement issued by Aspen Insurance Holdings and RSG also revealed that Issavi is being replaced as CUO by Christian Dunleavy, the former managing director of Aspen Re, and Aspen Bermuda Ltd.’s chief executive officer and CUO. Dunleavy also is joining Aspen’s Executive Committee with immediate effect.

In addition, Peter Emblin, currently managing director, London & Global head of Specialty, Aspen Re, has been named senior managing director, Aspen Re.

Biographies

Christian Dunleavy, Aspen Re’s new chief underwriting officer, previously served as CEO of Aspen Bermuda, a role he took on in May 2019. He also had been CUO of Aspen Bermuda since May 2017. Dunleavy joined Aspen Re in September 2015 as head of Global Property Catastrophe. He previously worked at AXIS Reinsurance where he was a senior vice president, responsible for U.S. property treaty, Caribbean property and workers compensation catastrophe business. Prior to joining AXIS in 2002, he was a senior analyst at RenaissanceRe, responsible for multiperil modeling, pricing and portfolio analysis. Dunleavy is a director of the Association of Bermuda International Companies and an independent director of Colonial Group International.

Peter Emblin, Aspen Re’s new senior managing director, joined the company in September 2009 to establish a dedicated reinsurance platform in Latin America. In early 2011 he became the head of Specialty Reinsurance London, and also assumed responsibility for Aspen’s reinsurance business in Asia and the Middle East in August of the same year. Emblin was appointed Aspen Re’s managing director for London & Global Head of Specialty in June 2017. Previously in his career, he was managing director at Swiss Re, leading its Latin American region for both property, casualty and life business as well as heading the treaty business for the large national accounts sector in the U.S. Prior to this, he spent time with Munich Re in various senior marketing and underwriting positions in both New York and Munich. He is a chartered insurer and a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
