People Moves: PartnerRe’s Hanhart to AXIS Re; Zurich Names Verkerk to New Role of Chief Platform Officer; PwC’s Maxwell to MS Amlin as CRO

These International People Moves include appointments at AXIS Re, Zurich Insurance Group and MS Amlin.

Details of these new hires follows.

AXIS Re, the reinsurance business segment of AXIS Capital Holdings Ltd., announced that Nicole Hanhart has joined AXIS Re as Property Underwriter, EMEA & Latin America, effective July 1.

In this role, Hanhart will be responsible for underwriting a property treaty portfolio for Latin America. She will work in partnership with the underwriting team responsible for this region.

Hanhart joins AXIS Re following over 20 years with Partner Re, where she was most recently a senior underwriter with the Global Catastrophe team. Hanhart’s underwriting experience includes assignments in Chile, Miami and Zurich and stretches across Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Hanhart will be based in Zurich and report directly to Gino Smith, head of Property, EMEA & Latin America.

Zurich Insurance Group has appointed Frank Verkerk to the new role of group chief platform officer to accelerate the development of digital services to meet rapidly changing customer needs.

He joins Zurich on Aug. 16, 2021 from ABN Amro, where he was chief digital officer and responsible for digital transformation. In his new role, Verkerk will focus on enabling open platforms with third parties for Zurich businesses to quickly develop and integrate next generation insurance-as-a-service solutions.

Verkerk will work closely with Zurich’s Global Business Platforms business unit, under the leadership of Jack Howell, to accelerate development of digital and modular services. He will be based in Zurich, Switzerland, and report to Ericson Chan, group chief information and digital officer.

During his time at ABN Amro, the bank’s digital share of total sales grew rapidly and it became a market leader in video enabled advisory services for customers. In addition, Verkerk initiated and chaired ABN Amro’s Corporate Venture Capital fund, AA Ventures, specializing in fintech. Earlier in his career, he founded various digital companies, including MoneYou, a challenger digital bank, which was launched in four European countries, and the P2P payment platform Tikkie, one of the largest B2B2C platforms in The Netherlands.

MS Amlin Underwriting Ltd. (MS AUL), the Lloyd’s specialty re/insurer, announced it has appointed James Maxwell as interim chief risk officer (CRO), subject to regulatory approval.

Maxwell will take up the role on July 5, 2021, following the departure of CRO Vishal Desai, who is leaving the company for personal reasons.

Maxwell brings more than 25 years of experience in financial, operational and enterprise risk management. He joins MS AUL from PwC where he served as a partner in its Assurance Division and led PwC’s risk, governance and controls proposition for insurance.

Prior to joining PwC, Maxwell was the CRO at FTSE100 Oil & Gas company BG Group. He also worked in EY’s Financial Services Risk Management Team for many years in both London and Sydney, and has also worked in South Africa, Switzerland and the United States.

“Vishal Desai has made the difficult decision to step down from his role as chief risk officer (CRO) following changes in his personal family circumstances. In the short time Vishal has been with us he has proved himself to be a valuable member of the executive team and we will be sorry to see him leave.
