People Moves: WTW Hires Magilton to Lead Canada Risk & Broking, Powney to Head Surety for Europe/UK; Hiscox Re & ILS Names MS Amlin’s Wilken as CUO

WTW Hires Canada Risk & Broking Leader, Europe/UK Practice Leader for Surety

Insurance broker Willis Towers Watson announced two appointments in one day: Erin Magilton as the new Risk and Broking Canada Region leader and Steve Powney as Surety Practice leader for Europe and the UK.

Erin Magilton

Magilton has over 25 years’ experience in the risk and broking industry and was previously senior director, Corporate Insurance Risk Management at RBC. In her previous roles, Magilton has led the global insurance risk management team at Manulife/John Hancock, created and led the Risk Managed and Large Account practice for JLT Canada, the National Real Estate practice for Marsh, and managed the oil and gas-based Calgary branch at Aon.

Magilton will be responsible for leading the Risk & Broking team in Canada, based in Toronto, and will report into Mike Liss who leads Risk & Broking for North America.

As Surety Practice leader for Europe and the UK, Powney reports to Scott Hull, WTW’s global head of Surety. Powney was previously head of International Surety at Crum and Foster and has led surety operations for Asia, Europe and the Middle East. His responsibilities include underwriting, production and operational excellence.

Hiscox Re & ILS Names MS Amlin’s Wilken as CUO

Specialist global insurer Hiscox has appointed Matthew Wilken to the role of chief underwriting officer for Hiscox Re & ILS.

Wilken joins on Jan. 10, 2022 with responsibility for executing the Hiscox Re & ILS underwriting strategy, ensuring the needs of clients and capital partners are successfully met to deliver long-term value for the business. Based in Bermuda, he will become a member of the Hiscox Re & ILS executive team and will report to Kathleen Reardon, CEO of Hiscox Re & ILS.

Prior to Hiscox, Wilken was head of Reinsurance at MS Amlin, a role he assumed in March 2021. He spent his early career at Kiln Syndicate in a variety of underwriting roles, rising to deputy active underwriter for Kiln Reinsurance. He joined Argo Re as chief underwriting officer of Argo Re Short Tail and later became president, before moving to Ariel Re as active underwriter Syndicate 1910 and deputy global head of Reinsurance.
