Ohio Department of Insurance Hosting Fraud Seminar

Ohio’s Department of Insurance will host the 2002 Insurance Fraud Seminar on Wednesday, March 6. The seminar will feature presentations by several fraud enforcement experts on topics such as “Crimes Against Seniors,” “Computer Internet Fraud,” and “Prosecuting Insurance Fraud.”

The seminar will begin at 8 a.m. at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center, 1630 Schrock Road, Columbus, and continue through 4:30 p.m.

The seminar fee of $75 — $40 government rate — includes lunch and seminar manual.

Ohio Department of Insurance Director Lee Covington will kick off the seminar with welcoming remarks at 8:30 a.m.

Dave Kessler, Chief of Investigations for the Ohio Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section, will present “Crimes Against Seniors” at 8:45 a.m. Kessler previously served 19 years with the Dekalb County (Georgia) Police Department as a Detective Lieutenant. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner and speaks nationally about financial crimes.

Matthew L. Fornshell, Attorney Inspector with the Ohio Division of Securities, will speak about promissory note fraud at 10 a.m. As Attorney Inspector, Fornshell is responsible for managing investigations into all potential violations of the Ohio Securities Act.

The Honorable Nancy M. Russo, Judge of Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas will provide judicial perspectives on insurance fraud at 11 a.m. Judge Russo currently has jurisdiction over felony criminal matters and general civil matters, and manages a court docket of more than 400 cases per month.

Thomas J. Hollis, Investigator with the Ohio State Chiropractic Board, will speak about chiropractic fraud beginning at 2:15 p.m. Hollis will share his experience investigating multi-million dollar healthcare fraud and computer crimes.

David Buchman, Chief of the Economic Crime Unit, Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, will address the topic “Prosecuting Insurance Fraud” beginning at 3:15 p.m. Buchman is a career prosecutor who worked his way up through the Columbus City Attorney’s Office, reaching the post of Chief City Prosecutor before joining the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.
