PIIAI Issues Market Share Reports for 2001

December 13, 2002

The Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois (PIIAI) has put together a synopsis, based on A.M. Best’s analysis of state by state reports for commercial lines, personal lines, personal auto, and homeowners for 2001.

The data makes it possible “to ascertain the premium volume for the given lines, as well as the respective market shares for each of the distribution systems in Illinois. These reports are unique because they break out the direct response writers and the captive agency writers, rather than grouping them together as direct writers,” said the bulletin.

The PIIAI indicated that although the figures weren’t perfect, it had worked with A.M. Best “to separate out the business written in the independent agency affiliates of the captive agency company groups provided that agency business is written in separate affiliates.” While “some company groups choose to do it this way, others don’t. A.M. Best has reclassified the independent agency affiliates that could be identified for Allstate, Liberty Mutual, and Farmers.”

“The direct business of AIG (except for 21st Century), The Hartford, and Progressive has not been reclassified because separate affiliates could not be identified,” the announcement continued. “Thus, this direct business appears in the independent agency numbers. Similarly, the independent agency business written in Allstate’s rural agents program remains in the captive agency column, as does the workers comp business written by agents and brokers in the California State Compensation Fund.”

Although “multiple distribution methods” complicate the process, the PIIAI said that the IIABI has been working with A.M. Best on an exclusive basis “to make the numbers as accurate as possible.”

Among other revelations the statistics showed that while captive agent writers comprised 19.85 percent in Commercal Group business, they accounted for 71.43 percent of auto policies and 72.21 percent of homeowners.
