N.D. Offers Comp Fund Job to Former Md. Chief

April 1, 2004

The former head of the Maryland’s workers’ compensation fund has been offered the job to run North Dakota’s insurance program.

Thomas Cleary was offered the position to become the new executive director/CEO of Workforce Safety and Insurance by the WSI board of directors at a board meeting held yesterday in Bismarck.

Cleary was the executive vice president and chief operations officer with the Maryland Injured Workers’ Insurance Fund (IWIF), the single largest workers’ compensation insurer in Maryland with a staff of 400. Prior to his role with the state of Maryland, Cleary served as an executive for two private industry insurance firms in Arizona and New York.

WSI’s previous director, Brent Edison, was fired late last year after a number of complaints about his demeanor and managerial style, including angry responses to suggestions and a failure to address complaints.
