Mich. Blues Re-elect Chair and Vice Chair, Name New Board Members

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Board of Directors recently re-elected Greg Sudderth of Gladstone in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to his fifth year as board chair, and re-elected John M. MacKeigan, M.D., of Grand Rapids to his fourth year as board vice chair.

Sudderth is president of Executive Labor – Management Services Inc., a company specializing in addressing the needs of private and public sector employees and their respective local unions. The company has offices in Gladstone and Farmington Hills. Sudderth has served on the Blues’ Board of Directors since 1993 and represents the small business community.

“Greg Sudderth’s extensive knowledge of health care has helped us move to align the company to better serve our stakeholders and compete for business in emerging markets,” said Daniel J. Loepp, Blues president and CEO.

A Grand Rapids resident, MacKeigan is vice president, medical
affairs, of Michigan Medical P.C. He has served on the Blues’ board of directors since 1998 and represents physicians.

Board Vice Chair MacKeigan is past president of the Michigan State Medical Society, and has served as president for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids.

“John MacKeigan brings a physician’s perspective and also a real sense of how individuals, groups and others view the everyday delivery of health care,” said Loepp.

Two new members also were appointed to the board for two-year terms beginning April 2006:

* Brian M. Connolly is president and CEO of Blue Water Health System, which includes Port Huron Hospital. He replaces Gerson Cooper. Connolly represents providers and is a Port Huron resident.

* John E. Bodell, D.O., is a Trenton, Mich., physician and president- elect of the Michigan Osteopathic Association. He replaces Lewin Wyatt, D.O. He resides in Grosse Ile and represents providers.

The Blues board has 35 members. Eight seats are filled by medical professionals, four by gubernatorial appointees and one by company management. The remaining 22 seats are filled by Blues customers from large, medium and small groups as well as individual subscribers.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, a nonprofit corporation, provides or administers health care benefits to over 4.7 million members through a variety of plans.
