October 4, 2007

The Kansas Insurance Department (KID), recently announced that Larry Bruning has been elected and installed as a new director of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Bruning, with 29 years of experience as an actuary, was seated as an Academy director Oct. 3 during the Academy’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. He has been with the Kansas insurance department since 2003.

As a member of the Academy’s Board of Directors, Bruning will help set strategic goals and priorities for the organization, which functions as the public information group for the actuarial profession in the U.S.
The group provides testimony and information to members of Congress and senior federal lawmakers. The organization also works closely with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), as well as state officials, on issues concerning insurance, pensions and other forms of risk financing.

Bruning currently serves as the chairperson of the NAIC Life and Health Actuarial Task Force. He has served in numerous leadership roles for the Academy—most recently as the chairperson for the Centralized Examination Office Team. He has been a member of the Academy since 1984. He also teaches actuarial mathematics and statistics at Washburn University, Topeka, and previously taught at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
