Assurance Agency’s Seminar HIghlights Legal Concerns, Human Resources

Schaumburg, Ill.-based Assurance Agency, recently held an educational seminar on “The ‘New’ Legal Landscape for HR Professionals – A 2007 Report” at the headquarters in Elk Grove Village, Ill. The three hour seminar was attended by business leaders from more than 90 local area companies according to the Assurance written statement.

The seminar focused on the legal interpretations of common employment issues which can help businesses avoid litigation and improve their overall workforce. Presenters focused on the overlapping state and federal legal requirements concerning FMLA, ADA and Workers’ Compensation matters. There was also significant discussion on the pre-hiring legality and effectiveness of drug and alcohol screening, as well as physical evaluation assessments.

Dr. Scott D. Morris, medical director from Concentra, discussed best practices in the pre-employment screening arena.

Barbara Bauer, divisional vice president from Omnia Group, explained how personality assessments can help reduce turnover and save money. She discussed the importance of making certain that prospective employees are truly a proper fit for their position as well as with their team and manager.

Jill Cheskes, attorney with SmithAmundsen, discussed ways to legally address numerous aspects of the new-hire process. This discussion included employee handbook policies and procedures, job descriptions, interview questions, job application questions as well as questions about the Family and Medical Leave Act, technological issues and workers’ compensation guidelines.
