Ohio Probes 8 Fires in Eastern County

October 15, 2008

The state fire marshal’s office is asking for tips from the public as it investigates a rash of fires in eastern Ohio’s Columbiana County.

Since mid-September, the county south of the Youngstown area has seen five arson fires and another three that investigators say were probably set deliberately.

The fires hit three campers, two barns, a business, a vacant home and a garage with a mobile home inside. Officials say all eight cases have similarities. State Fire Marshal spokesman Shane Cartmill says no one was injured.

Fire Marshall Michael Bell says given that the fires occurred in the same general area within a fairly short time, his division believes someone holds useful information and needs to come forward.

A $5,000 reward has been offered.
