Arsons Increase in Rockford, Illinois; Some Occurring Simultaneously

October 17, 2016

Firefighters in Rockford, Illinois, are alarmed by a rise in arsons this year and urging city residents to be wary and report any suspicious activity.

According to the Rockford Register Star, 35 fires in the city were set by arsonists as of Sept. 30. That is up from 20 during the same period last year.

Rockford Fire Division Chief Matthew Knott says there have been no arrests.

Investigators say they have no concrete links between the fires, but some have occurred simultaneously and in locations close to each other.

The fires have not resulted in any deaths, but firefighters say some of the blazes have been particularly dangerous. One burned a multi-family home where seven people lived.

Several firefighters have been injured battling the fires.
