Former Iowa Insurance Claims Rep Pleads Guilty to Fraud Charge

July 2, 2018

A former claims representative in West Des Moines, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to defrauding an insurance company, the Iowa Insurance Division reported.

Cora Harrington entered a guilty plea on June 25, 2018 to Fraudulent Practices in the 2nd Degree, a class D felony. Harrington was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay restitution.

Harrington was originally charged in connection with an investigation conducted by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau, which began in 2017. The investigation concluded that Harrington submitted false information in support of insurance claims and altered insurance company records in order to generate payments for her own benefit.

In order to facilitate her scheme, she altered the names of parties involved in insurance claims and created payments under those fictitious names. Checks were generated and subsequently deposited into bank accounts belonging to Harrington. Harrington’s actions resulted in her receiving payments of more than $4,000 from the falsified claims.
