Kansas Commissioner Schmidt Sworn In For Second Term

January 10, 2023

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt today took the oath of office to begin her second term Monday.

Re-elected in November to her second four-year term, Commissioner Schmidt received the most votes of any statewide candidate for office.

Under Schmidt’s leadership, the Kansas Insurance Department has returned more that $26 million to policyholders, including $7.6 million in 2022. Schmidt spearheaded an operational overhaul that lowered the cost of doing business in Kansas for the insurance and securities industries by more than $36.5 million.

Before serving as insurance commissioner, Schmidt spent 14 years in the Kansas Senate, representing Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties. A pharmacist by trade, she chaired the Public Health and Welfare Committee and served 12 years on the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee. Schmidt currently represents Kansas at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, where she serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the Midwest Zone.
