Monteleone, Mullin Receive PLUS Awards at Annual Conference

The Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) recently honored Joseph Monteleone of The Hartford Financial Services Group with its 2003 PLUS1 Award at the organization’s 16th Annual International Conference.

The PLUS1 Award is presented to a person whose efforts have contributed substantially to the advancement and image of the professional liability industry. Selection is based on analysis and thorough consideration of the qualities of each candidate relative to the criteria. Criteria include reputation and success in the professional liability industry, history of lectures and service on panels addressing topics in the industry, current activity in professional liability, activity and involvement in PLUS, longevity in the insurance industry, and measure of impact on the professional liability industry.

Monteleone is vice president and claims counsel at The Hartford’s Hartford Financial Products (HFP) in New York. He joined The Hartford in 2001 and has management responsibility for all claims personnel and claims arising under insurance products underwritten.

He previously has worked at Kemper Financial Protection, Reliance National, Chubb & Son, Continental Insurance Companies and the law firm of Mendes & Mount.

PLUS honored William Mullin of Chubb Re, Inc. with its 2003 PLUS Founders Award.

The Founders Award recognizes a member of PLUS who has made lasting and outstanding contributions to the Society. The Award is presented in honor of the spirit and dedication of PLUS Founder Angelo J. Gioia and other individuals who have contributed selflessly to create PLUS and establish it as the voice of the professional liability industry.

Criteria used when selecting the Founders Award include membership in PLUS, participation in PLUS activities, creativity and innovation when needed to address PLUS tasks, amount of time and effort dedicated to the organization, promotion of PLUS in the industry and to the public in general, or other contributions to the image of PLUS, and involvement in developing, implementing, improving and/or continuing its programs.

Mullin is managing director of professional liability for Chubb Re, Inc. Mullin joined Chubb Re, Inc. in September 2002. Prior to that he served as senior vice president of Gerling Global Reinsurance Co. of America as the director of reinsurance for professional liability lines.

Mullin had an integral part in the formation and the development of PLUS.

He served on the Board of Trustees from 1989-91 and 1993-98 and was president of the organization in 1996. In 1997 Mullin championed the formation of the PLUS Foundation and he is its current president.
