Ernst & Young’s Tony Anderson to Be Honored By City Of Hope

City of Hope’s National Insurance Industry Council will honor Anthony “Tony” Anderson, retired vice chairman and Midwest managing partner of Ernst & Young LLP, with its 2012 Spirit of Life Award.

The Spirit of Life Award is City of Hope’s most prestigious philanthropic honor, presented annually to an insurance industry leader who has demonstrated outstanding professional and philanthropic leadership.

Anderson will receive The Spirit of Life Award on, Oct. 27 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

“I’m a big believer in the critical role business leaders play in the community,” said Anderson. “A city will never reach its full potential without the active, hands-on support of the business community. That’s why I’ve made it my personal mission to give back in a meaningful way. City of Hope’s commitment to medical research and philanthropy impacts communities around the world. I’m honored to be recognized by this outstanding institution.”

While based in Chicago, Anderson managed a practice of over 4,000 assurance, tax, advisory and transaction professionals serving clients across a 12-state region. During his 35-year career, Anderson also served as Ernst & Young’s Pacific Southwest managing partner from 2000 until 2006 and was based in Los Angeles. His background includes leading the firm’s Pacific Southwest insurance practice from 1996 to 2000. Anderson began his career at Ernst & Young in 1977 as an audit staffer in Chicago. He was admitted to the partnership in 1989.

Anderson has served on boards including the California Science Center, Town Hall of Los Angeles, and Children’s Bureau of Southern California. He has served as a member of the corporate advisory board of the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. In Chicago, Anderson serves on the boards of the Lyric Opera, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, World Business, Chicago, The Field Museum and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is chairman of the board of the Chicago Urban League. Anderson is a member of the American, California and Illinois Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

The National Insurance Industry Council was founded in 1978 by a group of insurance industry executives and is composed of property-casualty companies, law firms, brokers, accounting firms, reinsurers, executive placement firms and actuaries in the insurance industry. To date, the National Insurance Industry Council has raised $19 million for City of Hope.

City of Hope is a research, treatment and education center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. It is designated as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest honor bestowed by the National Cancer Institute.
