Smith Joins GSJ Re as Executive Vice President

Insurance and reinsurance veteran Thom Smith has joined the Los Angeles-based reinsurance intermediary GJS Re as executive vice president.

Smith brings four decades of insurance and reinsurance experience covering a range of operations and responsibilities. Most recently, Smith was president of Sullivan Brokers, a transactional wholesale brokerage focused on all lines and classes of business.

Worldwide Facilities last week completed its acquisition of Sullivan Brokers, along with several other businesses of The Sullivan Group owned by Jerry Sullivan. However, Sullivan retained ownership of GJS Re and remains chairman of the reinsurance intermediary.

Previously, Smith was president of Great American Custom, chief claims officer at Munich Re (American Re), chief commercial claims Officer at Farmers, and a retail insurance agent.

Complementing the company’s existing reinsurance capabilities, Smith also brings experience with alternative risk transfers to improve the balance sheet of commercial entities with legacy liabilities or other unique financial incumbrance.

“Having worked with Thom for many years, I am pleased to have his strategic perspective and his ability to deliver extraordinary results to an individual transaction or an entire operation,” said Sullivan.

Established in 1980, GJS Re is a national insurance intermediary providing consulting, market connections and reinsurance to program managers and issuing carriers, and product development services for select divisions of regional and national insurance companies, using their long term market relationships with top rated issuing carriers and reinsurers.
